Diesel in a petrol car in Gateshead: what to do-
# Diesel in a petrol car in Gateshead: what to do
By Rambo S, Wrong Fuel Expert at Fuel Fixer International · 29 September 2026

Put diesel in a petrol car? It is less destructive than the reverse — diesel will not ignite properly from a spark — but it still has to be drained out. Call 01293 248666.

## Why it happens less often
A diesel nozzle is usually too wide to fit a petrol filler neck, so this mistake is partly designed out at the pump. It still happens — with older cars, with jerry cans, and at forecourts where the nozzles are not the standard sizes.

## What diesel does in a petrol engine
Very little that is catastrophic. Diesel will not ignite reliably from a spark plug, so the engine smokes heavily, misfires, and eventually stalls. It fouls the plugs and can clog the filter, but it does not strip lubrication the way petrol does in a diesel.

## Still drain it
It still has to come out, and the plugs and filter are worth checking afterwards. Around Gateshead it is the same call, the same price and the same hour on site as any other misfuel.

## Around Gateshead
Gateshead calls concentrate around the MetroCentre and Team Valley. Shoppers and through-traffic fill because they happen to be there rather than because they planned to, and Team Valley adds a heavy load of trade vans and fleet vehicles. Weekend retail peaks at the MetroCentre and a weekday trade pattern at Team Valley, with the two producing quite different jobs.

That applies across the villages we cover, including Carr Hill, Windy Nook, Leam Lane, Wardley, Felling Shore, Springwell, Harlow Green, Beacon Lough, Allerdene, Teams, Winlaton Mill and Blaydon Haughs.

Stop. Do not turn the key Whatever else happens, this is the decision that matters. Contamination only travels under power.
- Resist the urge to move it The instinct is to get out of the way. Unless you are somewhere dangerous, staying put is the cheaper instinct to follow.
- Safety before diagnosis If you are on a live carriageway, get out and get behind the barrier, and let the police or National Highways deal with the lane first.
- Phone 01293 248666 You will be asked four questions and given a price and an arrival window. Both are honest rather than flattering.
- On-site extraction The tank is emptied, the feed lines are flushed, fresh fuel goes in and the system is primed and run.
- Done, and the waste leaves with us Under a waste transfer note. It is not tipped and it is not sold back to you.

## The mechanical reason the advice is always the same
Every drainer tells you not to start the engine, and it is not a sales line. The fuel path runs tank → lift pump → filter → high-pressure pump → injectors, and contamination only moves along it under power. Stationary, the problem stays in the tank where it is cheap to remove. Under power, it spreads into parts that are not.

The Western Bypass junctions either side are among the busiest in the region. A vehicle stopped on the slip roads causes problems well beyond its own driver.

## The cost, honestly
People expect the number to depend on the amount of wrong fuel. It barely does. It depends on how far the contaminated fuel travelled through the engine.

**Call-out**: From just £89 misfuel callout fee
**Engine never started**: Usually the drain and flush only
**Engine run briefly**: Drain, flush, often a new fuel filter
**Driven some distance**: May need the high-pressure pump or injectors checking — a workshop job
**When you hear the price**: On the phone, before anyone travels

## Questions we get asked

**Is there an out-of-hours surcharge?**
The call-out is the call-out. Whatever the total is, you hear it on the phone before anyone travels.

**Can I just top it up with the right fuel?**
No. Dilution does not fix contamination, and driving to a filling station to try it is the mile that turns a drain into a repair.

**How long will I be waiting?**
Arrival depends where you are across NE8 to NE11, NE16, NE21, NE39 and NE40 and what is already running. You get a realistic window on the call rather than an optimistic one.

**Do you cover all of NE8 to NE11, NE16, NE21, NE39 and NE40?**
Yes, from one rota — so being at one edge of the area rather than the other changes the arrival window, not the price.

**What if I have already driven it?**
Still call. Most vehicles driven a short distance are recoverable. Tell us how far you got, because it changes the kit we bring.

## What customers say
4.8 out of 5 from 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. The thing reviewers mention most is technicians who stay calm and professional with someone who is having a bad day, followed by how quickly a van turns up.

The most common criticism is price, so here it is plainly rather than buried: the call-out is From just £89 misfuel callout fee and the full figure is given on the phone before anyone travels. Nobody arrives and then tells you what it costs.
